Jas G Blog

When we released Not a superhero – our very first single release in 2010 – it was a new adventure for us. We’d spent a few months at the recording studio to get this single out and it was a great learning curve for us newbies. Recording in winter and fighting back colds and flus during our studio time was a great challenge in itself.

In the songwriting process, James and I don’t set out to write particular songs, we just create from what flows out. Sometimes it is a song to inspire others in an event or situation they’re in, while other times it’s for a congregation-setting. And then there are some songs that are just for us.

In 2010 we had been writing a few songs to inspire others; sharing a message of hope and endurance to push through whatever you were facing (cue Not a Superhero music here…)

While we enjoyed those songs and in many ways they inspired us also, we soon discovered that at the end of the day, what really grabbed our hearts was singing about the One who gives us hope and endurance: our Saviour, Jesus Christ, God the Father and the ever-amazing Holy Spirit.

Not a superhero was a catalyst to a number of opportunities to play our music at gigs, festivals and events. And it was in these that we had our epiphany and what we really desired was to join with others and sing in unison about our wonderful God. Where spectators become participators and participators become worshippers.

And from that, we embarked on Project W.

Project W was the working name we gave to the new direction we are taking. In essence, it’s mainly a focus on producing lyrics and music that we first did when we began collaborating as youngens: praise and worship (P&W).

For some of our listeners, this might not be your cup of tea. And it’s quite a change from the songs we have done whenever we’ve performed live.

No doubt, there will be some songs that are not of the P&W genre; those that speak so strongly to us that we are keen-beaning to share with you. What if we try is one such song (about social injustice) and is a personal favourite. If we ever do get the opportunity to sing and play outside the P&W genre, this is definitely a message we want to share.

So now, we’re working on Limitless – our new P&W album. We had intended to release a full album in 2011, following our Not a Superhero release, and while we’re a year out of that schedule, we feel we’re personally on the right track to fulfill what is being sweetly, but firmly, impressed on our hearts.

We hope to share more of this journey with you as we continue to record Limitless.

It seems like a long stretch of road (recording 10+ songs is not for the impatient, I’ve discovered!), but we know it has a final destination, and for now, we’re enjoying the journey!

JasG

James G Blog

I have been thinking a lot in recent weeks about how it’s very easy for us as Christians to lose the meaning of what God is asking for in the “new song”. I have been working on a couple of songs for a while now… trying to find that sound, that riff, the right effect… and it’s really easy for the songs that Jas and I are writing / producing to become old for us before they are new to you. I can’t tell you how many times I have sat and listened to “Call Out” in the last few weeks… I have lost count.

But the revelation comes to me that the new song is not about the words, the chords, the experience of hearing a song for the first time. It’s all about the new revelation within the song. It’s about singing / playing for the Lord with the passion of the new song regardless of the amount of times that I have sung it. It’s really about coming back to the first love for Him and letting His Spirit make my worship new, as He is the only one that can renew anything, even our song.

I see worshiping in the “new song” as being similar to reading God’s word… it’s like you could read “Jesus wept” and only see two words on the page, but each time you think about it, His word revels more and it becomes new again. Jesus wept… Jesus (our King, creator, saviour, was moved so much that he) wept. Jesus (the author and perfector of our faith, the firstborn of all creation, the eternal one) wept, you see what I mean?

I can’t be passive in my worship, it’s got to be a new song every time… and by His grace, a song written 100 years prior is as new today as it ever was if I allow God to renew my mind and sing it with a new revelation that can only come from His Spirit. I am moved every time I hear a passionate heart lift up their worship to Him… and I pray that as you hear our music that you will also be able to have a new song moment every time through His awesome grace and power.

James

But it seems the inevitable has happened. We’ve grown “old” too. And time has flown by.

January 2012 is all but over – in a couple of hours – and we’ve enjoyed having a long Christmas / New Year break and taking a bit of a breather. Mind you, we did sneak in a visit to Caravan Records for one Saturday (catch the video sample at our Seeing Verity Facebook page) and spent some time working on a plan to get our first album out by mid-2012.

But the holidays are now over and we’re getting back into the swing of creating music and heart songs that echo our passion in life. We’ll be sharing more about this in the coming weeks, and soon you’ll start to notice a “different” Seeing Verity. It’s definitely going to a be a journey, and we hope you’ll join us on it.

How time flies! It was just 2 weeks ago that we had the honour and privilege of playing some of our tunes at the Christmas in July dinner.

For those who hadn’t seen our posts on Facebook before today, the event was held at Georges River Community Baptist Church for their charity organisation, Lifecare.

The hardwork their team has put into bringing great services to the local community – and on the night for the annual fundraising event – was amazing.

James and I were thrilled when we heard that around $20k was raised on the night.

And it’s even more moving when you see others doing what is echoed in your heart. And these guys are tackling social injustice head-on.

The song we wrote earlier this year, “what if we try” speaks to that exactly.

Just imagine….what if lil old me and lil old you (or lil young you!) decided to take a stand against injustice?

A little, lone voice grows much louder when others are joining in. So whaddaya say…will you join in too?

“All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke
